Publications: FMR 49 now online – Disasters and displacement in a changing climate

Forced Migration Review issue 49, entitled ‘Disasters and displacement in a changing climate’, is now online at www.fmreview.org/climatechange-disasters

In light of the projected increase in the frequency and intensity of disasters associated with climate change, the number of people displaced in the context of disasters will inevitably rise. Existing national, regional and international legal regimes, however, currently respond to only some of the protection concerns arising from such displacement. Crafting an appropriate response will demand a cross-sectoral approach that addresses different forms of human mobility and which also recognises the local knowledge, values and beliefs of affected communities.

This issue of FMR includes 36 articles on ‘Disasters and displacement in a changing climate’, five articles on ‘Female genital mutilation (FGM) and asylum in Europe‘, and five ‘general’ articles on: Cartagena +30, trafficking for human organs, animals and forced migration, refugee-state distrust on the Thai-Burma border, and sweet tea and cigarettes in Jordan.

Global Estimates 2012: People Displaced by Disasters is a newly-released report from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC).  It finds that “98% of all displacement in 2012 [an estimated 32.4 million people] was related to climate- and weather-related events… .”  Follow the link to access the text of the report, a press release, global estimates highlights, and a map.

Special Virtual Issue of Disasters Journal

A special virtual issue of the Disasters Journal has been published to coincide wth the 60th anniversary of the UN Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.  This special virtual issue is entitled : Refugees and the Displaced and is edited by Sara Pantuliano, Helen Young and David Alexander.

Disasters Journal

Co-editor Sara Pantuliano states that :

“this special issue of Disasters features a selection of the most relevant and original articles about refugee and displacement issues published by the journal over the past 35 years.

These articles provide a rich source of informed thinking on humanitarian responses to the needs of populations fleeing persecution, war and disaster, with much to contribute to our understanding of refugee and displacement crises past, present and future.

Common to all these contributions are the complexities which arise when people are forced to flee en masse, and the challenges faced by humanitarian workers in providing assistance and protection following a crisis.”
